Yes, And

25 September 2026

Sweaty palms. Racing heart. An inner voice frantically questioning every life decision that led to that moment.

I've talked about getting uncomfortable on purpose in the ROI of Getting Uncomfortable newsletter. But recently, pop culture provided another example on why pushing past that awkward initial barrier is where cohesive leadership happens.

In Season 4 of Ted Lasso, Ted uses a classic improv comedy rule to help Coach Alice connect with her team: "Yes, and..."

Instead of shutting down requests or blindly agreeing without boundaries, he teaches her to accept the reality in front of her (Yes) and build productively upon it (And...). It immediately brought me back to when Dr. Troy Hall and I took an improv class together at Theatre 99 in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. We weren't looking to launch comedy careers. We went to Theatre 99 to scare ourselves, step outside our comfort zones, and experience firsthand what happens when you strip away scripts and ego.

Here is what stepping onto that improv stage, andd watching Ted Lasso apply it on the pitch, teaches us about building cohesive, high-performing teams:

  1. Ditch "Yes, But..." for "Yes, And...": Leaders often default to "Yes, but..." or a flat "No, because...". It sounds reasonable, but to your team, it signals a dead end. "Yes, and..." doesn't mean agreeing to every wild idea. It means validating your team's input first, then steering the momentum forward together.
  2. Improv Forces Absolute Presence: If you're inside your own head planning your next clever reply on stage, the scene falls apart. Theatre 99 taught us that to succeed in improv, you have to be completely present and listen intently to what the other person is saying before making a decision. Cohesive leaders don't just wait for their turn to speak. Instead, they actively hear their people.
  3. Shared Discomfort Creates Trust: Standing on stage with no script and nowhere to hide is intimidating. But going through that productive discomfort together creates psychological safety and connection faster than any passive lecture could.

Leadership Takeaways

Building an exceptional culture requires stepping beyond familiar boundaries. When you approach high-stakes decisions and organizational shifts with a "Yes, And" mindset, you replace rigid resistance with active listening, trust, and momentum.

How are you encouraging your team to embrace the unexpected this week? Have you tried applying "Yes, And" in your recent meetings?
